Target Audience

This interactive, comprehensive in-person course helps nurses and other cancer care team members better understand cancer care or prepare for the Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) exam.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe how cancer is detected, staged, and graded; the differences among major treatment modalities for cancer.

  • Explain pathophysiology, diagnostic measures, signs and symptoms, and common treatments for selected malignancies: breast, lung, colorectal, prostate, and major blood cancers.

  • Select effective symptom management, identification and management of key oncologic emergencies, and education for patients and their caregivers about their role.

  • Compare the American Cancer Society evidence-based cancer screening guidelines for breast, lung, colon, cervical, testicular, and skin cancer for individuals at average risk versus high risk.

  • Identify issues of cancer disparity, health literacy, and cultural competency as it relates to cancer prevention, health promotion, and cancer care.

  • Evaluate strategies to support optimizing care of patients with cancer through topics such as evidence-based practice, care coordination, shared decision-making, and professional practice issues.

Criteria for Successful Completion

  • 1) Register for course

  • 3) Complete the all educational content

  • 4) Complete/submit evaluation form

Participants can receive 9.3 nursing contact hours. To receive credit, you must attend the entire day and complete the additional on-demand video content. 

Attendance in this course does not guarantee success in passing the Oncology Certified Nurse exam.

Elaine DeMeyer

Elaine S. DeMeyer, MSN, RN, AOCN®, BMTCN® is the owner of beyond Oncology Education, LLC and has been a nurse entrepreneur for more than two decades. She knew she wanted to work in cancer care at a young age when her mother died of cancer before she graduated high school. Her career began with a BS in physiology with a minor in chemistry from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and then a BSN and MSN from St. Louis University. She has been an oncology nurse for more than three decades with roles as staff nurse, nurse educator, nursing school faculty, clinical nurse specialist (CNS), managing editor, scientific director, medical writer, and chief operating officer. Elaine leverages her healthcare background along with creativity, business knowledge, and collaborative relationships to improve oncology care through numerous partnerships on a variety of projects related to certification, mentorship, health equity, and resilience. She not only partners with national and international organizations, but remains active in her Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) community through her involvement with Cancer Support Community North Texas (CSCNT) and the Dallas Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). One of her life goals is to inspire, encourage, and motivate nurses and other oncology care team members to choose a career in oncology and stay in oncology. She is best known for her creativity in education using original and inspiring ideas to teach difficult concepts, highly engage learners, and mentor new nurse speakers and authors. Throughout her career, she has received several awards including mentorship, research, and career development awards. She is honored with an annual scholarship in her name from the Dallas Chapter ONS.

Fatemeh Youssefi

Fatemeh Youssefi, PhD, RN, OCN, has served as a nurse for over 3 decades with a specialty in oncology for the past 20 years. Her education consists of bachelor degree in nursing from Texas Woman’s University, followed by a master degree and PhD from Texas Woman’s University in Health Studies, Higher Education. Through educational experience, she believes in empowering her colleagues particularly through oncology certification and networking through collaborative abstracts and projects. Fatemeh believes nursing is an ever-evolving field that requires constant learning, but it is rooted in the same fundamental values that are essential in everyday patient care. She has had the honor of taking her nursing skills and knowledge into the community to help those who do not have easy access to medical assistance or education. Specifically, she has served as a healthcare coordinator with the annual Day of Dignity humanitarian event where they provide hygiene kits, medical screening, and health prevention education to more than 200 attendees residing in south Dallas.
